The law was passed in response to the tragic shooting at a Connecticut elementary school in December 2012, but a lot of detractors believe that not only was the law pushed through with no public input and no debate, but that it impinges on the rights of law-abiding gun owners while doing little to curb gun crime.
The majority of legislation that attacks New Yorkers’ second amendment rights comes from downstate. Is it any wonder that a place that has already forbidden firearms supports terrible legislation like the SAFE act? Reason should dictate what gun related laws we have IN THE STATE- not emotion, nor downstate politics (which unfortunately holds the entire state hostage). Downstate needs to be separated if we’re going to see any end to corruption in Albany.
